Middle School Students Build Cities of the Future

Future City is a project-based engineering challenge for middle schools students where they imagine, research, design and build cities of the future.  This years’ challenge was to create a resilient power grid that could withstand and recover from a natural disaster.  On Saturday, January 19, 2019, our 3 teams traveled to San Diego to compete in the Southern California regionals which included 25 teams.  Thank you to Ms. Begley and Ms. Cowgill for coaching our teams, and Ms. Hancock, Ms. Belzer, Ms. Rudolph, Mr. Spencer and Ms. Matuchniak for providing class time and their assistance working with the teams as well.  We also thank our visiting engineer mentors, Bing Neris, and Dr. Yue, along with Dr. Hussain who gave her time to present to our teams on power grids.  Our 6th-grade team, Sunlight City received a special award for Best Residential Zone and a 7th-grade team, Ka Nalu finished as a finalist in 3rd place.  Please join us in congratulating all of the teams and teachers on a fantastic competition season!
